Introduction to Arduino Class

This class is a beginners class for the Arduino development platform. This class will cover:

  • Introduction to Microcontrollers
  • Basic Circuit Theory
  • Basic Programming Concepts
  • Hands-on circuit building

UPDATE: Nick has posted a wrap-up of the class on his blog where you can also find his class handouts including schematics and arduino code.

Prerequesites

There are no prerequesites, however you must have an Arduino Uno (or clone) for the class. An Arduino Uno may be purchased as part of the class registration.

Cost

The Introduction to Arduino class has a registration fee of $25, which includes an electronics kit with the following components:

  • 5 10K resistors
  • 5 1K resistors
  • 10 220ohm resistors
  • 8 Red LEDs
  • 4 Green LEDs
  • 2 Yellow LEDs
  • 1 RGB LED
  • 1 7-segment LED
  • 1 LM335 (Temperature Sensors Precision 1 Deg Cel)
  • 1 Potentiometer 10K ohm
  • 2 12MM push button switches
  • 1 Piezo Transducer (speaker)
  • 1 74HC595A Shift Register (8-Bit Register/Latch)
  • 1 140pc JUMPER WIRE KIT
  • 1 400 TIE POINT BDBRD W/PWR RAILS

An Arduino Uno R3 development board plus a USB cable to connect to a computer will be available for an additional cost of $30, however you must make payment arrangements in advance to ensure availability.

If you bought an Arduino from another source, make sure you have a proper USB cable (Male A to Male B). USB cables can be purchased separately from the Arduino package above for $2.

Location

Unless otherwise specified, the location of the class is at the 10BitWorks Hackerspace at 1020 Roosevelt, San Antonio, TX 78210.

Class Dates

The class will be available on the following dates:

February 4, 2012, 1:00pm - 4:00pm, 5:00pm - 8:00pm

There are classes scheduled to run, one from 1:00pm to 4:00pm and the other from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. This class has a sponsor for 10 students. The first 10 students to register will receive the electronics kit for free (not including an Arduino). A suggested donation of $5 (or more!) to the 10BitWorks Hackerspace is appreciated. Arduino Uno boards and USB cables can still be purchased for a cost of $30.

Registration for this class is now closed.

What to Bring

If you have a laptop computer, it is highly recommended that you bring it with the Arduino Software already loaded. Don't forget a USB cable! If you bought your Arduino Uno at Radio Shack or some other source that didn't supply a USB cable, one can be purchased for $2 at the workshop.

Although somewhat dated, use this tutorial to get the software set up and load the Blink sketch. Note: You DO NOT need to use an external LED! If you have difficulty, there will be help in the class to get you started.
